Arctic chill

Listening to the Arctic Monkey's gives me goosebumps. They have this undeniable flare about them, that's like a drug to me. For the past two weeks, they've been the number one spot on my iPod and believe me, that a very hard spot to come by. I normally don't listen to music made in the last 5-10 years, but this band makes it hard to pull away.

My personal favorite is "Fluorescent Adolescent" from their 2007 album, "Favourite Worst Nightmare". I had originally found this song on Elvis Costello's celebrity playlist a couple years back, and I instantly fell for the witty yet creative lyrics and sound. I wandered through iTunes, looking at the rest of their work and found my new obsession. All their songs provided this comical and relaxing sound that made me yearn for more.

Yet, after a while, I stopped listening and went back to listening to older stuff. I have no clue what was going through my mind at that point in time...

However, the other day, I put my iPod on shuffle and almost fell over when I heard "When the Sun Goes Down", it was like I had missed something for a year. Since then I've been a woman obsessed. And, I'm happy to say I'm ok with that.

Oh, and if you see the post time on this, I'm guessing you figured out that I can't sleep :)

Quick Post: Dragons, confetti, and drums...

(Photo from madlofa.wordpress.com)
So far, it's been great here in New York. I've done anything and everything I've wanted to do, aimlessly wandering around the city is a fantastic way for me to get my mind off of things. I wish I had a camera more than anything, on Saturday I went to Chinatown which was one of the best photo oppurtunities of my life. Thinking back on the experience, I can literally picture what magic I could have captured with my camera. Toddlers in awe of the confetti around them, the lively groups of drums and cymbals as they follow the extravagant dragons around the streets, in and out of shops and resturants. It was a sight I will never forget, one day I hope I can actually visit China during the New Year and see where the festivites began.

However, I'm now sitting in my hotel room waiting for the rest of my family to finish whatever the hell they're doing. I'm currently multi-tasking --- well, attempting to--- by continuosly typing this post then checking Facebook and viewing all of the things I dread to go back home to. After my family is ready to go, we're going to experience the corny tourist crap: go see fifth avenue, walk through central park, etc, etc... Talk to you later!

Concrete Jungles

(credit for this photo goes to Polyvore)

So instead of sitting in the middle of nowheresville for the next week, I will be happily walking down the streets of New York City. It's been a while, but I figured I would go to the MoMA, see the Gabriel Orozco exhibit and do some thrift shopping in SoHo. I'm also looking forward to my daily cappuccino from Le Pain Quotidien, drinking these superb drinks provide a realization that I'm in my favorite city in the world. Sounds like the best week that I will have in a while.

The only downside is, I'll be missing fashion week by one day. Today marks the end of the exquisite shows taking place at Bryant Park for the past week, but I will be sitting in the Alice + Olivia store next door, pretending that the Carolina Herrera and Max Azria shows are within walking distance. After looking at all of the photos from the shows, I must say that I absoulety loved the looks from the Marchesa collection. I'm always a sucker for the style of those dresses, if only they weren't thousands of dollars! Pictured above is one of my favorite Marchesa dresses from a couple seasons ago, the Pleated Organza Dress. The design and the color are perfect, and the way the pleats were put together were genius. I'm pretty sure that Anne Hathaway wore this dress for an event, and I envy her for being able to do so...

Still on fashion week, one of my favorite trends that I look forward to test-running is the girlie-chic military style. It's got this tough tom-boyish look to it, yet but adding ruffles it looks effortlessly cool. I've got this band-esuqe military jacket, that I surprisingly bought at American Eagle Outfitters. I was forced by my friends to go to the mall despite my phobia of mass production chain stores, and was pleasantly surprised when I found this grey-green coat peering from the corner. I've been planning my outfits around this jacket, and plan on bringing it with me to NYC tomorrow.

Wish me luck finding good finds at the myriad of thrift stores I plan on going to, and talk to you soon!

Change in Plans

(credit for this photo goes to Craig Gleason)

So bad news...my camera has been taken away from me. In other words, somebody thought it would be a great idea to steal it from me while I was in New York. So, no photos. My mother says that although it is unfortunate that my camera is gone, there's is no chance in hell that I'm getting a new one for a while. Instead, I figured I would attempt to turn this into more of a fahsion-y slash random column for the time being. So for my first attempt, a quick post..

Have you seen these? They are genius! On the artist, Craig Gleason's blog you can see some of Lady Gaga's most famous, controversial looks transformed onto the dollar bill. Gleason's original take on the infamous superstar shows us that Gaga seems to truly be dominating the world, even by replacing the first president of the US. Right now I can envision these dollar bills being framed and idolized on my wall. I love Lady Gaga, she's the only person I could think of who can rock those Alexander McQueen heels so well! This is a truly incredible take on something as dull as an old dollar bill, and turning it into something extraordinary.

New Beginnings

Hey everyone! My name is K and I'm a high school student living in east coast. I live in a small town, which most people will have never heard of, so there's no point in even mentioning it. At my school, everyone wears jeans and Uggs. There's the occasional attempt to dress nicer, but it usually results in a groups of clones. For me, I'm more of a stand out type of girl, who enjoys wearing dressing up a bit, hence the title of this blog. In upcoming posts, you'll see what I like to wear and how I try my best to stand out. I feel like I should get this out of the way, so here it goes...

I've grown up parading through my mom and occasionally my grandmother's closets, in which I find multitudes of clothing I envy. My mom had given me a pair of vintage Chanel kitten heels when I was about 13, for they had become to small for her. Since then, I've become a fashion addict. I'm a sucker for the 50's, so I search through vintage shops every chance I can on vacations, since there are none where I live. Because of the major upset, I've adapted to modern designers and have actually grown to love them.

Those discount designer websites such as Gilt Groupe, are life savers, since fashion is definitely not cheap, and I don't have the amount of money it would cost to fully satisfy my clothing desires. I do love high-end designers, but most of my favorite finds are under $100.

So that's my little story on fashion, I'll elaborate as the posts continue.

See you soon,
K
